THE VISIT TO ROMANIA

From 28 May to 2 June 2013 the last meeting on the project “Tolerance as key to social integration of young European citizens” was held in the Romanian town of Iashi. The city is located in north-eastern Romania, in the historical region of Moldova. Its population is about 300,000 people.
We spent the first day  at Liceul Teorectic “Miron Costin”. First, teachers and students (divided into two groups) were shown this wonderful school which is well furnished and equipped and looks great. Then the students participated four different workshops dedicated

to tolerance: Tolerance Melting Pot, where the participants had to cook pancakes specific to their countries; Tolerogame where the students were grouped in mixed teams and received some questions about tolerance and EU in all project languages; they had to interact and communicate with one another to find out the meaning of each question, to be able to choose the correct answer; Toleroscrabble, where they played scrabble in groups of three or four; and

Poster Making where, again, groups of students had to work together to create

posters about tolerance. Later we attended the celebration of the graduates from Liceul Teorectic “Miron Costin”.
The second day was eagerly awaited because it was dedicated to a research visit in Bucovina –Practical examples of Tolerance (religion) and Intolerance (Vlad the Impaler). In this way they could compare and contrast the Orthodox religion and Byzantine architectural style to

their own; also, when arriving at Castle Dracula, the guide told them the real story of Vlad the Impaler (the so called Dracula), how he used to impale the country’s enemies and traitors, the thieves and other bad people, showing no grain of tolerance towards those people.
On the third day we were again at Liceul Teorectic. Students participated various sports games (handball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis) in the modern gymnasium of the school. School coordinators discussed  some final issues on the project. Just before the lunch break we gathered in the school yard. Students and teachers, guests and hosts arranged to draw the Key of tolerance( the project logo). Some of the students were given balloons with inscriptions of tolerance messages on thgem. They let the balloons float in the sky. In the afternoon we attended an artistic program, presented by the talented students of the school.
Students spent the Saturday with their host families. The guest teachers a guide sightseeing tour of Iashi. We visited Three Saints Cathedral and saw to the relics of St. Petka the Bulgarian. We saw the city’s university, which is the oldest in Romania, founded in 1860 and many other historical and cultural landmarks.
The days spent in Iashi will remain unforgettable. The city is trying to be announced The Cultural Capital of Europe for 2015. We hope this will happen. The city deserves it!

Teatrul Luceafarul.
